A new labelling standard that identifies ‘green’ toiletries and cosmetics is being released today.

Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) says the new standard covers toiletry and personal care products such as soaps, shampoos, oral hygiene products, skin care, cosmetics and deodorants.

GECA has produced the label and will oversee the certification of the standard.

To display the label, manufacturers will need to satisfy conditions on palm oil, toxic chemicals and ‘greenwashing‘.

Tom Godfrey is a director of GECA, and is the spokesman for the consumer group Choice.

“Really it’s about giving an accurate understanding of these ingredients that go into everyday cosmetics,” he said.
